Family History

From LDSOSS

Family History is important to members of the LDS Church because of their commitment to a concept they call the redemption of the dead, in which they perform religious ceremonies in their temples on behalf of deceased individuals, especially their own ancestors.

GeneWeb

GeneWeb allows you to keep track of ancestral data. It is a powerful system for maintaining a set of data about your family history. It supports much of the GEDCOM tag system for data storage, and can be used either as your primary system for archiving genealogical data, or as a web service (through a CGI interface) for publishing your data for others to use.

GRAMPS

GRAMPS (Genealogical Research and Analysis Management Programming System) is an Open Source genealogy program for Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris and other Unix-like systems. It allows you to easily build and keep track of your family tree.

Ubuntu (Linux) users sick of gramps not installing correctly? Well then check this out

Troubleshooting

I have encountered another problem with Gramps on ubuntu I tried inputing info for my relatives and I could not input a thing about my family with my keyboard although I found the problem very quickly.

Jeens

This project is intended to be a Content-Management System more centered on creating family websites (similar to the way MyFamily.com works). Focus will be made on good design, and family/family-history-centric functionality. Samples of system can be found at [1], [2], [3] and [4].

LifeLines

LifeLines is a genealogy program that runs on Unix systems in text mode. It maintains genealogical records (persons, families, sources, events and others) in a database, and generates reports from those records. There are no practical limits on the number of records that can be stored in a LifeLines database, nor on the amounts or kinds of data that can be kept in the records.

LifeLines does not contain built-in reports. Instead it provides a programming subsystem that you use to program your own reports and charts. Some standard report files are included in the lifelines-reports package. The programming subsystem also lets you query your databases and process your data in any way. LifeLines uses the terminal independent features of Unix to provide a screen and menu based user interface.

The program is able to read and write GEDCOM files, the de facto standard for genealogical data exchange.

Personal Ancestral File

Personal Ancestral File, or PAF, is developed by the LDS Church as a tool for managing genealogical data. Information can be imported/exported from/to the GEDCOM format.

While PAF is not Open Source software, it can be freely distributed.

Written exclusivly for Windows, it can be run under Linux using Wine, as detailed here. It has been reported that PAF 5 will work on X86-based Macs using Wine and the X11 compatibility layer.

The data for PAF is not stored in a GEDCOM file. It has to be exported to a GEDCOM file to be able to transfer it to a different genealogy program.

Here is a link to PAF INSIGHT a really good utility to use in conjunction with PAF.PAF INSIGHT

PhpGedView

PhpGedView is a GNU GPL Open Source on-line genealogy editor and viewer created by John Finlay of Neumont University and developed by a team at Sourceforge.net. Its native file format is GEDCOM 5.5 genealogy files, and it works similar to desktop programs. All it requires to run is a PHP enabled web server and a GEDCOM file. You can easily customize it by using one of the provided themes or by modifying them to meet your own needs.

gedcomToHTML MODIFIED

Example of the code can be found at LeviNorth.com.

The modified code can be found at SOURCE.

This is a great tool to make HTML documents. They look nice, but be warned that with a large GEDCOM it will take up some space.

Uses PERL.

WeRelate

WeRelate is a mediawiki based genealogy solution. It has many great features such as gedcom uploading and family tree displays. Best of all because it is a wiki it is easy to collaborate online with relatives. Upload photos, scanned images, and gedcom files. HTML not required. WeRelate is a free public-service website sponsored by the Foundation for On-Line Genealogy, Inc.

Actually, some of the code is open source and some is not. Contact dallan at werelate dot org for more info.

SharedTree

This website is just launching. The goal of this site is to provide a location for people to upload their family files and possibly meet cousins. The site is designed so that if there is a connection to another family tree that is uploaded it will be merged at the point of the connection, making one giant family tree. This site allows uploads of pictures and sources. I think that this will be a great site and best of all, it is totally free. It also has a companion site of instructions that is designed in the wiki format. Come check it out. SharedTree
